My Top 5 Favorite Ways to Ground:
Here’s the skinny on grounding…Grounding is an exercise that connects you energetically to the earth (fun fact: you can also ground up…what? Yup! But that’s for another day). As a practitioner, grounding allows us to have what we call a neutral presence with our clients. It’s how we create that warm feeling when you walk in. You know the feeling. The one that makes you think we never yell at our kids…that we’re so zen ALL.THE.TIME. Truth is, we’re not. But we work very hard to remain grounded when you’re in our care. The same goes for most moments of our lives. Grounding allows you to see the world through a calmer lens. It allows you to remain in the present moment. Who doesn’t want that?
Soooooo here’s my 5 favorite ways to ground…
Walk outside with your shoes off: No side-walks, you need good ole’ fashioned dirt, grass, or sand under your toes. I know this may be hard with the winter chill upon us but here’s tip 1.5 you can even place a hand a tree, take a deep breath and allow the natural energy of the tree to bring you down. So… if you’re walking through Rittenhouse & see me hugging a tree you know why.
Drink warm liquids: This one is my go-to for sure! I drink warm water ALL.DAY.LONG. This can include warm soups, teas, and other warm foods that feed your soul.
Dark chocolate: the darker the better, preferably organic & fair trade. You only need a small piece, so feel free to indulge, buy a really special bar, that is only for grounding moments.
Take an Epsom Salt Bath: now this one, THIS ONE, RIGHT HEEEERE, is everything! I may write an entire blog about how to kick this up a few energetic notches as if it could get better, right? But here’s the quick need to know…2 cups Epsom salt, very warm bath water, for 20 minutes. You can also add essential oils, I highly recommend a few drops of lavender essential oil. It not only smells lovely, but it’s also known for it’s grounding properties. Side note: you’ll want to drink a lot of water before & after and if you’re an essential oil newbie choose, PURE essential oil, NOT a fragrance oil. There’s a difference! There’s also a ton of safety concerns to consider when using essential oils so make sure to do your research. Essential Oils are amazing, however, they are highly concentrated, require knowledge and respect. A few drops are all you need. If you’re local to Philly The Herbiary in Reading Terminal is a great spot to find high-quality oils. Online, Mountain Rose Herbs is a great trustworthy site to purchase from.
Dance: that’s right, DANCE, my friends, DANCE. Dancing is a great way to get back into your body quickly. Any physical activity will bring you back down to earth but dancing is such a fun way. One of my personal favs is Shake It Out, Florence + The Machine.
